If its school system is so bad, how come America is #1? The US is about to be knocked off its perch. In 2006 ten times as many engineers will graduate in both India and China, as in America. We've had a good run but it's now over.
Much of the brilliance of America's achievements have come from the brightest 5% or 10% of the population, who have the ability to succeed in spite of government schools.
Perhaps the premise is wrong; the school system is pretty good, despite Segment 12.
America's strong tradition of individual work and responsibility has driven enterprise to be successful by family influence, stronger than that of the schools. Schools have damaged that work ethic, but it's still there and still exceeds that of many other cultures.
